PETER VAN DER SPEK

about his fancy pigeons

My interest in animals, but especially pigeons, was learned at home. I was born in Loosduinen (near The Hague NL), and in those days there were many flying boxes on the roofs in this area. There is a photo in existence with me standing in the run pulling a cock out of the box by its tail.

THE OLD DUTCH TURBIT

attracting more interest

The Old Dutch Turbit is a very ancient breed, notwithstanding the fact that it was only officially recognised by the Dutch Standard Committee in 1938, having been neglected and forgotten by the fanciers in earlier years.   Fortunately, the interest in this beautiful Dutch breed has again increased, due to the changes made to the breed in bygone years.

A VERY INTERESTING VISIT

On Sunday the 19th of July 2015 we had the opportunity to visit the Open Day of the the Bruno-Dürigen Institute (Scientific Poultry Yard of the BDRG, the Poultry Federation of Germany). This Scientific Poultry Yard was officially established in 2004. The main goal of the institute is the achievement of knowledge about the biology of traditional and fancy poultry breeds, through fundamental research as well as science-based animal welfare.

INBREEDING or not?

Inbreeding is breeding with individuals of the same family or tribe. In other words, breeding from related animals. Some breeders turn down inbreeding in all forms, others use it regularly.

THe Cap de Frare

A Catalonian Tumbler

This is a breed of ancient origin. Evidence for the presence of the Catalonian Tumbler (Vol Català) in Spain dates from the eighth century; it would have been brought to Catalonia by the Arabs during the Moorish occupation of Spain from 711 to 1492.

The beautiful

mystery of hatching

The hatching process is a beautiful process. In just three weeks, an egg transforms from what is essentially similar to a fertilised table egg into a live, complete chick.

Building a chicken house in Africa

Here in Africa really all kind of materials are used to build a chicken house. As long as it is suitable to shelter the birds for the night, it will do. Why bother to build it nice and straight?
