AMERICAN SHOW RACERS

OF FRIEDEL BOSSMEYER

In today's breeders interview Volker Lortz visited the well known American Show Racer breeder Friedel Bossmeyer from Frankish-Crumbach, Germany. Most would agree that the success of this pigeon breed in Europe over the last 20 years would not have been so eminently possible without Friedel Bossmeyer.

ORIGIN OF THE EUROPEAN

AND AMERICAN COCHIN

BANTAM (PEKIN)

Do the Pekin all originate from a small group of buff coloured bantams imported in 1860 in England, after the Old Summer Palace of the Chinese emperors was destroyed. And is the Pekin a true bantam and not the dwarf form of the Cochins?

THE DUTCH COLOUR

HOMER TO HAVE A

STANDARD

Several friends from the racing sport have stopped flying with their birds, but they still have pigeons in fantastic colours. In order to be able to continue doing something with these birds, the idea is to start breeding racing homers for their colour and exhibit them same as we do our fancy pigeons.

THE HISTORY OF

COCK-FIGHTING

The history of cockfighting goes back to Classical Era. Most experts agree that it originated in Southeast Asia. However, before it even became a sport, the bird was regarded as an admirable animal, drawing respect from men.

A MINI PEN PICTURE

OF THE SHOW SCENE

IN THE UK

The hobby of breeding show pigeons, by comparison with the other European countries, is on a very small scale. In the whole of the United Kingdom there are less than seven hundred registered fanciers. Of this small number only around fifty percent actually exhibit their birds in major competitive shows.

CONSERVATION OF THE

ST CRUZ JUNGLE FOWL

IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

The small pockets of jungle fowl still living in the wild are almost living dinosaurs and as such are of great interest and value to the world. These fowl which roam free on islands such as Santa Cruz in the Solomon Islands are of immense value to both the world food sources, economics and poultry genetics.

CONCERNING POULTRY

Vital chicks from properly stored eggs

At the time a fertile egg is laid, there is already a small embryo floating on the yolk. The vitality of this embryo must be preserved during storage until the point in time when the incubation process starts. To achieve this, the eggs are handled carefully and temperature fluctuations avoided as much as possible under practical conditions.

Sale of my Hobby books

One day you decide to make some room in your library. All the shelves are full, closets are overflowing and even the floor is already slowly piling up with stacks of club news files and exhibition catalogues. It is really getting out of control.

FRENCH EXHIBITIONS

Part 2

In France, it is quite normal on a Sunday afternoon to go and visit a fellow breeder who lives 200 miles away. This gives a very special atmosphere in the sport experience, especially at a show where participants often stay for a week (with their family) at a local hotel, to experience the total event.
