ICE PIGEONS

at Bernd and Jens Herbert

in Germany

Bernd and Jens Herbert have dedicated themselves for decades to the breeding of Ice Pigeons. The father Bernd Herbert has bred the Black Barred and Chequer in excel-lent quality. His son Jens specialises in the White Chequer but has also all the other colour varieties of this very popular German Colour Pigeon, all in Clean Leg.

Did you know the large Garvo transporters in Holland are decorated with beautiful Dutch Booted Bantams? This isn’t a coincidence, they are the bantams of Henkjan Garretsen, son of Garvo CEO Herman Garretsen. A publicity stunt or a committed breeder? To find out continue reading.….

TWO NEW EGG JUDGES

IN BELGIUM

Patience is a virtue I learned from my father. Especially when we were fishing together. Why do I use these words as an introduction? Four years ago I wrote a manual for people who want to learn to judge eggs. The request was from an enthusiastic group of Juniors from the Small Animals Association Angora Club in Bruges who wanted to learn.

THE NORFOLK GREY

The Norfolk Grey seems to be a bird that doesn’t know when to die out.  Given the number of times it has survived problems, maybe it should be called the ‘Phoenix Grey’. For reasons that should become clearer by the end of this story, a suitable subtitle, with apologies to Tolkien’s Hobbit, would be ‘There and Back again’.

THE MODENA IN

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand has a population of just 4.4 million people and correspondingly, the number of fancy pigeon breeders we have is also very low and indeed the number of fancy pigeon breeds kept is also limited. The English Modena has been the most popular breed of fancy pigeon here.

THE LITTLE WHITES?

Bantam Wyandottes Today and Tomorrow

Are “top-birds” with weights of 1600 g in hens and 1900 g in cocks what we really want? Could the standard weight of 1100 g to 1300 g be that easily ignored? Yes, it could. We saw that again last year, at the German Poultry Show for Bantam Breeds in Ulm, and at the Europa-Show in Leipzig!

CONCERNING POULTRY

~ Breeding Galliformes ~

Part 2

Many diseases and problems in captive Galliformes are directly or indirectly related to malnutrition. Breeders of gallinaceous birds should ensure that the natural habitat of the birds is adequately imitated and be aware of the natural foods consumed by any species maintained in captivity.

NEW CREATIONS

NOORDSHOW

JANUARY 2013

At the Dutch National Poultry Show – housed at the Noordshow in Zuidlaren, Januari 2013, there were again many new creations shown to the public and submitted for approval to the judges of the standard committee. Unfortunately not all new creations were recognized, but from most of them we are able to show you a nice photo.
