. . . or not? It all started at the young animal day of the Rare
Cropper Breeds Club in 2009. Dick Hamer had brought some young Gelderland Slenke and to my surprise there was a blue one between
them. Dick told me that he often had blue coloured
birds in both barred and chequer. By : Peter Goossens (NL) 8 pages - 730 kB

THE BARNEVELDER Barnevelders the most famous of all
Dutch chicken breeds was created in and around Barneveld at the turn of
the last century and achieved worldwide fame. The breed arose when local
farmyard fowl were mated to the Asiatic fowl that arrived in Europe from
the 1850s onwards. Apart from an increase in size the added benefit was
their brown eggs and most importantly they laid these during winter when
egg prices were at their peak. By : Elly Vogelaar (NL) 15 pages - 1.1 MB

CONCERNING POULTRY - mating strategies - Breeding your own chickens ... this
is where keeping chickens gets really interesting. It's one thing to
just KEEP chickens, but another thing entirely, to create your own strain
of your chosen breed. It is by careful selection and breeding of their
birds, that the famous chicken breeders around the world have made their
mark and now it's your turn to take the first step. By : Greg Davies (Australia) 4 pages - 340 kB

THE MOOKEE - What you should pay attention
to - The Mookee is a pigeon for both beginners
and breeders with experience. It is not very difficult to breed, they are
excellent parents and 3 or 4 nests are not a problem, so an ideal bird
for beginners. For experienced breeders, the combination of the
cor-rect type, good colour, well defined head marking and a full ‘mane’
with peak crest, give enough difficulties and challenges for anyone.. By : Peter van Amelsvoort

THE BUCKEYE My attention was caught when I read
something bizarre on the website of the ALBC, the American Livestock
Breeds Conservancy. Although the ALBC is a reliable and highly valued organization,
I thought it wise to check that remark with the people who should know best:
the breeders of this old and rare American chicken breed. By : Elly Vogelaar (NL) 7

PIGEONS IN INDIA Part 2 This article on Indian pigeon breeds is a follow-up
of the article published in our 2011 August issue. Some of the Indian breeds
are loved for the special sound that they make. One of those pigeons is the
Yahoo – a breed fully unknown in Europe. The Yahoo and the Gul Mehendi have been described
in the former article, but we had no photos available at that time. By : Tanveer (India) 14 pages - 1.7 MB |
