A visit at Jos van Dorp

in De Lier (NL)

His first pigeon literally dropped in; it was a thief pouter that was slammed against the front window of their house during a gust of wind. Jos and Riet took care of the pigeon, and named it "The Wanderer". Sometime later his father supplied the lonesome bird with a few Fantails and so it all began.

BELGIAN GAME :

ORIGIN &

CHARACTERISTICS

‘The Belgian game is the largest and most powerful chicken breed in Europe and is noticed as one of the best Game Fowl’, so begins Jacque (1858) his monograph of the description of the variety. The appearance of the breed, however, changed frequently over time with the result that uncertainties arose about the original breed characteristics.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED

WITH THE DUTCH

FRILLBACK CROPPER ?

1997, the Dutch Frillback Cropper was recognized as a new breed in its country of origin. Other countries followed, including the UK and this pigeon enjoyed a short-lived popularity. Now, 15 years later, only a handful of breeders are left in The Netherlands, while in other countries this Cropper is no longer seen at shows.

CHICKEN RUN - visiting

Marius Gahrmann (NL)

What can be better than listening to an enthusiastic breeder talk about his hobby, and most of, about all ‘his breed’? This time we introduce to you Marius Gahrmann from Boskoop, the Netherlands, who breeds a typical Dutch chic-ken, the Groninger Meeuw - bantam variety.

CONCERNING POULTRY

~ stress ~

They don't call them 'chicken' for nothing. By nature, most chicken are cowards. They are afraid of their own sha-dow. Poultry are prey and their genetic code predisposes them to the flight instinct, even when they're hand-reared and tame. Fear creates stress and there's a sound medical reason why stress allows disease to take hold in an otherwise healthy bird.

RAISING JAPANESE QUAIL

Japanese quail (Coturnix) are more docile than other quail species since they have been so domesticated overtime. They do make great pets and many people who cannot have chicken due to their location have quails as their laying source or companion. Coturnix can be housed in smaller confinements than poultry. They require little space to procreate.

Damascene club

in the Netherlands

On their annual club meeting the Damascene Club discussed the forthcoming European Damascene show in 2013 in Frankenau, Germany. Another topic was the renewed Standard. The ruby eye was again mentioned in the standard; this breed typical characteristic was sorely missed by the breeders during the last years. Also the Chequer Pattern was explained.

WELSUMMERS

AND THEIR EGGS:

A UNIQUE COMBINATION

In the Netherlands, a great number of Welsummer eggs no longer are what they used to be; they are too small and too light in colour. The reason is that Dutch breeders are selecting predominantly for the birds’ exterior, they believe the Welsummer needs to conform to the breed’s standard and win prizes at poultry shows.

MODENA CLUB DAY (NL)

The Modena is a decorative pigeon, which has many demands to be a show winner, but in your loft it is a calm and attractive pigeon, which will certainly not be bullied. The breed comes in beautiful colours and mar- kings. Often each nest of young is a surprise, be colour. The Modena is a jewel in your aviary and its fanciers will bring you a friendship from all over the world. That is why they are so popular.

SILKIE DAY

A few years ago the Dutch Silkie Club changed the name of its ‘Young Animals Day’ to ‘Silkie Day’.  Each year in September Club members come to Barneveld and show their Silkies; both young and older birds. Now they have included a new class for Not-Standardized Colours; newly created colour varieties - some of which will begin the procedure of getting the colour recognized.
