THE MOOKEE

What can I say about the Mookee that has not already been said? Probably very little but maybe I can put the breed in a different perspective, from both the British and the European points of view. And of course I can tell you from my own experience about the endearing qualities of this lovely old breed.

THE CUBALAYA

A breed with rhythm

in the blood

The Cubalaya comes from Cuba. This Caribbean Island is the home of the Cha-Cha-Cha and the Conga folk dances, also the special and only chicken breed ever bred there, the Cubalaya. Understandably rhythm and vitality lay in the Blood.

CHICKEN RUN

visiting Sjaak van der Salm,

Westland (NL)

There was no need to question if we were at the right address… Each year Sjaak rears baby chickens and ducklings in the extension at the front of his house. Quite often kids come over and press their noses against the window to get a better look. Teachers and students too gladly change their routine to go past Sjaak's place to admire the baby birds.

THE Sebastopol gEEsE

Part 2.  The Sebastopol Goose

in Britain.

Much that has been written, and generally accepted, regarding the emergence of the Sebastopol Goose on to the ‘poultry arena’, has been speculative or merely the repeated errors of previous authors. It is hoped this summary will set the record straight.

qualzüchten

On 1 November the German government wants to ban exhibition of the so-called ‘Qualzüchten’ (breeding for extreme traits). This will have strong impact on the showing of fancy poultry and pigeons.

Here is a writing about the newly established organization ARGE - Poultry and Pigeons organization to maintain diversity, with the possibility to send a protest.

Also a writing by Wilhelm Riebniger of the BDRG in Germany concerns the new Animal Law, which also will have strong impact on the keepers and breeders of fancy poultry and pigeons.

CONCERNING POULTRY

~ probiotics ~

PROBIOTICS are a dietary supplement that increase the population of the 'good' bacteria (micro flora), which are needed in the intestinal tract in order to process food properly. The use of probiotics as a daily supplement has become a popular routine in the commercial poultry industry. You too can use probiotics in your own flock of chickens, or your pigeons.

CHICKENS IN AFRICA

My two elder daughters stayed in Africa, in various countries, for more than a year and a half. They both took photos of poultry because they know I am a fanatic poultry breeder. This opportunity has been an additional reason for me also to look into African chicken breeds. This article is a combination of my research - together with Elly Vogelaar - and the experiences of my two daughters.

The Pigeons from

Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia, the land between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris, is among the home regions of today's domestic pigeon breeding. Additionally, it is the original region of the Rock Dove (Columba livia), the ancestor of all domestic pigeon breeds we know today.

YOU’VE GOT TO BE

KIDDING!

The more I talk to people about pigeons, the more I am learning the pigeon hobby is a secret hobby known mostly by those who keep pigeons. The vast majority of the civilian population does not know about our hobby. This can be for many reasons. Staying secret for some, prevents anyone from knowing they have pigeons and minimizes their having problems with the neighbors or other organizations.
