AMERICAN SHOW RACER

After the 15 years we have had the breed in Europe, I have unfortunately come to the conclusion that we have made little progress, in fact we have stood still. In general, the gap between Europe and America, as the Country of origin, was becoming wider and wider. It appears now, after 15 years in Europe, some effort is being made to follow the American Standard of Ideal.

CHABO or

JAPANESE BANTAM

The Japanese Bantam - also known as Chabo - is an original bantam breed which has spread across the world from Japan. It is a very old breed - some hundreds of years - and it found its way to the rest of the world toward the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

MY THOUGHTS ON

BREEDING JAPANESE

BANTAMS

I have been breeding fowls and bantams for some 40 years, and have kept many breeds over that time. If somebody had told me back then that the breed I would fall most in love with would be Japanese Bantams, I would have said they were crazy.

BREEDING TOUCANS

Toucans are colourful birds from South America. They have a remarkable large bill compared to their body size. In total, there are 34 known species which show the highest diversity at the Amazon Basin. Breeding toucans in captivity is still rare. Weltvogelpark Walsrode in Germany was the first institution worldwide to breed toucans.

CONCERNING POULTRY

~ Rearing the chicks ~

Most serious breeders of show fowls use incubators to hatch their chicks. This is because broody hens are often unavailable when the supply of hatching eggs is greatest. Artificial incubation of chicken eggs is relatively easy. They are generally hardy creatures but they do need certain requisites in order to thrive. So what is required?

OUR TRIP TO Straubing

In December 2011, I already started to get excited about the upcoming pigeon market in Straubing, Germany. It is one of the largest pigeon markets in Europe.  It has been held every year on January 6. This Pigeon Market is very popular, at daybreak there was already an overwhelming number of people waiting to get inside the halls.

RUMPLESS:

BREED CHARCTERISTIC

OR ANOMALY?

Many breeds have a tail-less or rumpless variety, meaning, they do not have any remnant of a tail, or more specific: no parsons nose. This trait is caused by an autosomal dominant, non-lethal gene. For some it is breed specific. For me it is mostly a curiosity.
