SHIPPING

HATCHING EGGS

It is expensive to ship live birds. The airline contracts with the postal service seem to go through regular cycles of disruption.

Shipping hatching eggs is just about the only means of getting new blood.

ANCONA

season 2010/2011

The Ancona is now gradually becoming rare. It seems that the Mediterranean races have become completely out of fashion. The Andalusian and Minorca - both being important historical breeds - are hardly seen at our shows. Fortunately the quality of the nowadays Dutch Ancona is still good. Better than 25 to 30 years ago. But there are just too few breeders.

CHIBI & TOSA CHIBI

Bert Stantema, lives in a small village in Friesland, and occupies his time with breeding Chibi and Tosa-Chibi. Both breeds are scarcely found in Holland and very rare. Both Chibi and Tosa-Chibi have similarities with the Ko-Shamo, known everywhere in Europe. These two breeds are also rarer than the Ko-Shamo in Japan.

With our thanks to Bert Santema.

A Brief History of the

Swan Goose under

Domestication in the West

Part 2

In his book Water Birds (1805), Thomas Bewick stated to be acquainted with more than one form of the ‘Swan Goose’. However, the confusion really starts for poultry literature when, in 1806, William Turton M.D., presents three varieties of “Chinese Goose.”

CONCERNING POULTRY

-smell and taste-

In our former issues, we wrote about Sight and Hearing, but how about the remaining senses in poultry? You probably often experienced that your chickens will eat certain treats before others and wondered if they can taste or smell what the treats consist of.
