A FANCIER WITH THE

CONCEPT 'HOBBY' FIRST

AND FOREMOST

Mick Bassett, one of the Aviculture Europe Team from the very first, has experienced the Hobby in two very different countries: England and Germany. We could almost say three countries, as there still is a world of difference in East and West Germany.

CHICKENS IN ICELAND

In the summer of 2009, Henk Kooiman and Karin Pas visited several Icelandic chicken breeders and came back home in Holland with a beautiful series of photos of the ‘Viking hens’. We searched for information on the breed, but all we could find was published in the Icelandic language. However, with help and information from Jóhanna Hardardottir from Iceland, we are now able to proudly present you the story on this exotic and unknown chicken breed.

MY PHEASANTS

It is over 40 years ago that I bought my first pheasant - a Common Pheasant cockerel - which was pinioned and free-ranged with my bantam chickens. Sadly, within a few days the bird had disappeared. After losing more birds, I decided to build my first aviary.

CROAD LANGSHANS

It’s always a mystery why one person is attracted to a certain breed of dog… cat… or chicken… but as Secretary of the Croad Langshan club in Britain I’m often told by new members that they just ‘fell for’ these gentle giants when they first saw them.

DWARF GEESE

Mr. Tom Bartlett of Folly Farm, Gloucestershire, when interviewed for Country Living Magazine in the late 1980’s, claimed that creating a Bantam goose had not been achieved, and he would like to create such a breed. Had he read Appleyard’s little book, Geese, he would have known his statement to be imprecise.

THE AUSTRALISCHE

LANGSHAN

The Australian (or Chinese) Langshan was originally developed by breeders in New South Wales. The original stock used to make up the breed were: imported Chinese Langshans, Croad Langshans, English Modern Langshans and the true William Cook type Orpington. From these beginnings, one of Australia’s finest utility breeds began.

SOOTY OR CHECKER?

While doing my practical examination as a judge, I was presented with a number of birds of a particular breed.  The particular breed was from the colour pigeon group, where a lot of points are allocated for correct colour and markings. I told my appraisers that it is not a recognized colour in the breed; it was not a checker, but a barred bird, with a lot of sooty. I said that I will one day provide the proof and explanation, and that is what I’m trying to do with this article.
