	GOURNAY BANTAMS IN THE NETHERLANDS Since December 2004 we have Gournay bantams in the Netherlands. We very much enjoy their proud and confident nature and the lively and intriguing personality. Moreover the hens of these vigorous, jaunty bantams lay a large number of eggs of a surprisingly good size, being such tiny birds. Same as the LF Gournay, they come in mottled only. 	THE CHAMPIONSHOW - Opening - The very first combined Champion Show in Utrecht, Holland, was a Great Success! Three large Shows, the National Pigeon Union, the National Rabbit Union and a Poultry Show, all under one roof, plus Cavies, Mice and Rats ! It all made for a very varied and colorful Exhibition, not least due to the inspired leadership of the Chairman Kor Moree. We are hoping this will be a Trend for the next Hundred years ! 	INTERNATIONAL GIMPEL / ARCHANGEL SHOW Altogether almost 1.000 Gimpels, with exhibitors and judges from as far as I can gather, Germany, Denmark, France, Belgium, Holland (sorry if I have missed a Country out!). In all a very impresssive Show in a light and Airy Hall and so much Color, especially when the November sun shone through the windows and hit the cages, a real spectacle ! 	40 YEARS DUTCH welsuMmer club The Dutch Welsummer Club was founded in November 1969, thus 40 years ago. It has become a good tradition to celebrate each 5-years anniversary in the small village of Welsum, being the cradle of this chicken breed, known worldwide for its dark brown eggs. Not just the Large Fowl, but also the Welsummer bantams are very popular, because of the large number of eggs and the large weight of the eggs. 	BRAVE BIRDS The PDSA Dickin Medal, recognised as the animals’ Victoria Cross, is awarded to animals displaying conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units. The Medal, can only be considered on receipt of an official recommendation, was awarded 54 times between 1943 and 1949. The recipients comprised 32 pigeons, 18 dogs, three horses and one cat. 	REFLECTION Norm Thiele was my first mentor in poultry-keeping, being a gentle old man who bred beautiful Silver spangled Hamburghs, Rosecombs and rose combed Brown Leghorns. I can still remember seeing his large flock of Hamburghs running free in the early morning sun in his grassy paddock.
