Visiting two Ancient

Tumbler fanciers

We visited Henk Verhoork in Voorschoten (NL) and Rene van de Wouw (NL) in Oss, and tried to unravell the secrets of the Ancient Tumbler. The breed has had its ups and downs during the years. In the beginning the Ancient tumbler was mainly considered as a flying breed and served for improvement of several other flying breeds.

The Valencian Frill.

In Spain this breed has a first name and a family name; the first name Figurita, meaning: ‘little doll or small statute’ and Valenciana as Family name, indicating the origin, namely Valencia. In general everyone agrees that the Valencian Frill is the smallest fancy pigeon in the world.

THE ANCONA.

The Ancona is a so called Mediteranean Breed. Just as the Minorca, Valdarno, Leghorn and Andalusian; all breeds with a long, rich history. I used to find these breeds in many countries all over the world, but now they are becoming rare. We’d better be careful with this European heritage !

Speckles, Dots & Spangles

From :  Genetics of Chicken

Colours for Dummies.

Chickens have all kinds of patterns. Dots are just an example. Like curtains or clothes. For every interior and taste there’s a chicken in matching colour, with or without a pattern. In this article: The wide variation of speckles on chickens.

CHICKEN RUN.

The salmon colour is an ancient variety of Dutch Bantams, although you don’t see them at the shows as often as the partridge varieties. The other day we decided to visit Jo Otten in Gemert (NL), Chairman of the Dutch Bantam Club in the Netherlands to find out just what ‘proper’ salmon should be.

CONCERNING POULTRY.

Mice and Rats.

"Better none than a ton" you might say when confronted with the reality of rodents in our coops. Even though the concept of having mice in your coop is viewed as ‘inevitable’, there is a big difference between having a few visitors and a resident plague population !

Keeping Fancy Pigeons.

Part 3.

There has been a fair bit written about the do's and don'ts of how to keep Pigeons. This is just some practical advice from what I have learnt over the last 50 years. It’s not scientific, it’s not 'by the book' but it works ! In part 4 : Breeding.

THE RONQUIÈRES TURKEY.

In both Belgium and Germany there exists a white breed of turkey with black lacing: the Belgian ermine Ronquières and the German Cröllwitzer turkey.  The differences in the standards were so minimal that one could hardly tell the differences between both breeds. This made judging very hard to do.

GRIT.

Since birds do not have teeth, the gizzard is common to all birds and actually acts a replacement for teeth, with the grit in the gizzard helping to grind the food for easier digestion. Poultry fanciers often get confused by the word ‘grit’.
